‘Masters of the Trent’

Senior members of Trent Rowing Club competed in tough headwinds at the British Rowing Master Championships, held at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham last weekend.

Saturdays crew, made up of Shaun Carlton-Greaves, Anthony Scott, Lee Newbold and Luke McDonagh competed in the Championship Master C coxless quad event. They were strong off the start and held first place for the first 750 metres but were pipped to the line by Sons of the Thames who were 0.8 seconds faster, however they still secured a place in the final.

With an even stronger headwind the crew lined up for the final against five other crews. Again the Trent crew had a good start but fell into 6th place. At the 500 metre mark the crew battled passed Broadland Boat Club from Norwich and held 5th place as they crossed the line. The event was won by Exeter Rowing Club.

Sunday saw no let up in the wind conditions making the course choppy. The previous crew were joined by Mike McQuoney, Kenny Holmes, James Russell, Howard Russell and Niamh McDonagh (cox), to compete in the Championship Master C coxed 8 event. Despite having a good race, the crew didn't secure a place in the final which was won by London Rowing Club.

The British Rowing Race Committee took the decision to cancel racing at 2pm for safety reasons as the weather continued to deteriorate.  Masters Rowing is for competitors aged 27-89; the weekend regatta attracted a record entry of 940 crews as the interest in Masters Rowing continues to grow.
