It’s Gold and Silver for ‘Trent’s Alison Sutherland

On Saturday morning athletes from Trent Rowing Club travelled to London to compete at the British Rowing Indoor Championships being staged at the National Velodrome within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Alison Sutherland who was competing in the 55-59 ladies 2,000 metre event was looking to better her silver medal position from last year’s event. Having had a good start Alison settled in and was sat in the silver medal position just on the tail of the gold. Maintaining this position throughout the race, and with a hard push in the closing stages she narrowly missed the Gold medal by only 1.2seconds crossing the line in a time of 7:56.9 minutes. The Gold was taken by Nicki Glen from Isle of Ely Rowing Club.

Throughout the day many of the other Trent athletes achieved personal bests in their individual events.

Late afternoon saw Sutherland return to the race floor for her second event of the day, this time she was defending her 2017 Gold medal over a shorter 500mt course. Alison’s race plan was simple, ‘give it everything’, and that is exactly what she did. Leading from the start, Alison regained the Gold medal in a time of 1:44 minutes, pushing the Tideway Scullers lady into silver position in a time of 1:50.

This year’s championships attracted a record entry and is the only event hosted by British Rowing that uses rowing machines and not boats.
